Founded in 1995 by Mario and Luisa Fontana, the family estate is based on six generations of winemakers in the Langhe. Located in Perno, near Monforte d’Alba, the estate includes five hectares of vineyards cultivated using Biodynamics and converted to organic farming. Mario continues the tradition while integrating a modernity that respects the terroir.
Mario adopts an "old-fashioned" approach: manual harvesting and winemaking, indigenous yeasts, long fermentations, and aging in Slavonian casks for the Barolo, then concrete tanks. The credo? Balance, patience, and purity, without filtration, fining, or excessive interventions.
The vineyards are spread over the renowned crus of Castiglione Falletto (Villero, Valletti, Pozzo), La Morra (Gallinotto), and Sinio (Vigna del Castello), on clay-limestone soils on steep slopes. Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude, staggered harvest to express each terroir.
Barolo: blend of the three crus, demanding and profound, aged for two years in large Slavonian casks.
Barolo di Castiglione Falletto: micro-cuvée since 2013, pure reflection of the specific cru.
Langhe Nebbiolo: expressive youth, gentle fermentation, and intermediate aging.
Barbera d’Alba and Dolcetto d’Alba: pleasurable reds, fruity, refreshing, and digestible.
The wines of Cascina Fontana express a Beauty of yesteryear: tannic, noble, tense, and balanced Barolo; now more accessible through its freshness and elegance. Mario seeks the essence of Nebbiolo, without ostentatious luxury, with humanity and depth.
