Franz Hirtzberger — Master of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner

History & Terroir
The family estate of Franz Hirtzberger, located in Spitz in the Wachau Valley of Austria, has a long-standing viticultural tradition spanning centuries. Since the 1980s, Franz Hirtzberger has modernized the estate while maintaining a deep respect for traditional methods.

Vineyard & Grape Varieties
The estate covers about 25 hectares, mainly planted with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The vineyards, often terraced, are planted on rich, complex volcanic soils with optimal sun exposure, promoting slow, complete grape ripening.

Winemaking Philosophy
Winemaking focuses on fruit purity and terroir minerality. Fermentation occurs naturally in stainless steel tanks, with aging in large wooden casks (3000 to 5000 liters). Minimal intervention preserves the authentic expression of each vineyard.

Wine Style
Franz Hirtzberger’s wines are known for their power, aromatic finesse, and great freshness. The Rieslings feature floral and mineral notes with a perfect balance of acidity and roundness. The Grüner Veltliners reveal ripe fruit aromas and a long mineral finish.

Signature Wines

  • Grüner Veltliner Honivogl Smaragd: powerful, complex, intense aromas with a mineral finish.

  • Riesling Singerriedel Smaragd: elegant, refined, with bright acidity and floral notes.

  • Riesling Hochrain Smaragd: structured and tense, excellent for aging.

  • Riesling Steinporz Smaragd: rare wine with great aromatic complexity.
