Located in Martinborough, on New Zealand's North Island, Ata Rangi is one of the most iconic New World estates. Founded in 1980 by Clive Paton, a visionary and pioneer, the estate has established itself as the ultimate reference for Pinot Noir in New Zealand, often compared to the great names of the Côte de Nuits.

Terroir & philosophy

Martinborough benefits from a cool and dry climate, with a strong marine influence, constant winds, and remarkable thermal amplitude. The poor alluvial soils, rich in gravel, promote slow maturation and controlled yields. Ata Rangi works according to organic and biodynamic principles, with extreme care given to the vine and the balance of ecosystems.

The estate remains family-owned and independent, today led by Clive Paton, Phyll Paton, Alister Taylor, and the talented winemaker Helen Masters, who has been named Winemaker of the Year multiple times.

Vinification & style

Ata Rangi's philosophy is based on respect for the fruit and the place. The grapes are hand-harvested, rigorously sorted, and then vinified in small batches. Fermentations are spontaneous, aging takes place in Burgundy barrels (30 to 40% new depending on the cuvées), and rackings are kept to a minimum. The style is of rare elegance, combining depth, tension, and a natural smoothness.

Iconic cuvées

  • Ata Rangi Pinot Noir: the flagship wine of the estate, complex, floral, with remarkable precision. A global reference.

  • McCrone Pinot Noir: more discreet, refined, with subtle minerality.

  • Craighall Chardonnay: from old vines, tense, saline, with a chalky texture.

  • Célèbre: bold red blend (Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet), fruity and spicy.

  • Crimson Pinot Noir: entry-level cuvée, juicy and fresh, a perfect introduction to the Ata Rangi style.
