Styria – High-altitude white wines and characterful rosés from Austria
Styria (Steiermark in German) is the southernmost wine region of Austria, nestled in the southeast of the country, at the border with Slovenia. Famous for its fresh and aromatic white wines, Styria offers a unique terroir, composed of steep slopes, varied soils, and an Illyrian climate combining warm days and cool nights. It is also known for the Schilcher, a lively and mineral rosé unique to Austria.
The three major wine sub-regions of Styria
1. Südsteiermark DAC (Southern Styria)
Capital of Austrian Sauvignon Blanc: expressive, tense, and mineral.
Presence of Welschriesling, Gelber Muskateller, Traminer.

2. Vulkanland Steiermark DAC
Vineyards on volcanic soils, around Klöch, Straden, and Sankt Anna am Aigen.
Grape varieties: Welschriesling, Chardonnay (Morillon), Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer.
Wines with a spicy, mineral profile, with great tension.
3. Weststeiermark DAC
Region of the famous Schilcher, a dry rosé and tangy made from the grape variety Blauer Wildbacher.
